Impact needed.
As society is under pressure to prevent and mitigate climate change, we must look at the way we interact and think differently.
Everyone is aware of the impact human activity is having on the environment. Global warming is an existential threat to the survival of the planet and human civilization. The numbers are clear, the speed of decline is accelerating not reducing, even recycling isn't having the impact needed. We must think and act differently!
One of the main areas businesses are being implored to review is resource and material efficiency. Organisations need to look to their use of materials and assets to minimise waste and reduce their carbon impact.
Wastage from businesses is massive and it is here that there is an opportunity to make an immediate and positive impact.
“If organisations can reduce their wastage by small amounts on an ongoing basis, the cumulative impact can be high. Such reduction of waste can improve the carbon footprint of an organisation as well as driving process efficiencies and cost savings.”
Introducing the Circular Economy.
The circular economy is not a new concept and not a new way of working If we look back, societies and economies have always interacted in this way, repurposing assets, until relatively recently. Now, as supply chains become more stretched and restricted, and as global geopolitical situations become more unstable, looking back to move forward is increasingly necessary.
A circular economy is a model of production and consumption that involves sharing and reusing existing materials and products for as long as possible. Achieving a circular economy would significantly mitigate the damage we are doing to our environment and be a step closer to achieving a sustainable society.
“One of the top barriers to implementation of a circular economy is the closing of the loop between users and the lack of tools that enable effective communication that allows for the reuse of assets.
If we are able to close the loop between users, we are a step closer to achieving a circular economy and becoming environmentally sustainable.”
How we can make an impact.
There is an opportunity to promote environmental sustainability through the reuse of assets, enabled by technology.
Technology should be utilised to improve good processes and enable communication. It should encourage a culture of sustainability awareness and promote active participation within an organisation.
